Auto Insurance and Paint Damage to Your Vehicle

Auto insurance provides protection for vehicle owners from a wide range of thefts. In some cases, it can cover even small losses you may have, such as damage to the paint.

Should you file a claim with your car insurance for paint damage? This depends on the circumstances involved in your case. It is always a good idea to work with your agent to find out more about what your policy will cover specifically.

Does Your Policy Cover Paint Damage?

Comprehensive car insurance will usually cover paint damage from some types of incidents. Collision insurance may also provide coverage for you. These are specific forms of insurance you must buy in order to get coverage.

Comprehensive coverage provides financial protection from incidents ranging from fire, theft, vandalism, and weather. The specific coverage depends on your policy. Collision insurance covers damage caused by your collision with another vehicle or object.

If you only have liability insurance, you may not have coverage for the paint damage. This type of auto insurance covers only the other drivers or property losses you cause to others.

What Is the Cause of the Damage? silver car driving

In order for your policy to help you, it must be clear what caused the damage. Policies do not cover normal wear and tear. They also do not cover peeling paint or rust. But, if you have damage brought on by a scratch from another vehicle, it may provide you with protection.

How Much Is Your Deductible?

The next question to ask your auto insurance provider is what your deductible level is. You will have to pay the deductible first before the insurer pays you for the damage. For example, if you have a $500 deductible, and the paint damage is only $250, it will not pay you anything.

If the paint damage is more, perhaps $800, the insurer will pay you $300. Depending on the extent of the damage and the level of deductible, you may not find benefit in filing a claim. Too many claims can also lead to an increase in your insurance costs later.

If you have damage to your vehicle, take action to get it repaired. Work with your car insurance provider to find out if you have protection and how much coverage is available. Filing a claim only takes a few minutes. Update your policy to ensure it offers this type of protection.
