What Is Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

Most drivers know that if you get into an accident, one of the first things you need to do is gather the contact and insurance information from the other driver. In turn, you should give your auto insurance information to them. But what if the other driverimage of a car doesn't have auto insurance? This is where having uninsured motorist coverage is a good idea. Below, we will explain what uninsured motorist coverage is and whether you should consider purchasing it for yourself and your family.

What is uninsured motorist coverage?

Uninsured motorist insurance or UIM coverage protects you against uninsured drivers. It is true that having a certain amount of car insurance is required by law in all states. Just how much insurance is required will vary depending on where you live, but for the most part, every state at least requires drivers to have liability insurance. The purpose of liability insurance is to protect the other driver in an accident if you cause the accident.

Even so, there are actually huge numbers of drivers who are on the road without any type of auto insurance. This is against the law, but it's often easy to get away with if they are never pulled over.

If you end up in an accident with one of these drivers, you are basically up a creek without a paddle unless you have uninsured motorist coverage. You can purchase this type of coverage alongside your regular car insurance policy.

Your state may require uninsured motorist coverage

In certain states, uninsured motorist coverage is required. However, this isn't the case for all states. Whether you decide to purchase this type of coverage is largely up to you, but most insurance and financial experts recommend it. That's because a huge collision with another driver may happen any time. It may be entirely not your fault. And if it causes a large amount of property damage and possible injuries to yourself or your passengers, it can end up costing you tens of thousands of dollars or more.

You need to know that you are safe from a terrible scenario like this. Uninsured motorist coverage is not expensive. Average 6-month premiums are quite low, in fact. You can even add on underinsured motorist coverage (to bulk up the coverage if you are in an accident with someone who only has minimum insurance) for a reasonable add-on.

Consider looking into uninsured motorist coverage for yourself and your family. It’s a smart decision that can save you immensely in the long run.
